Why Smallholding?

Farming was in my blood from a very early age, although we didn't have a farm our selves. I spent an enormous part of my childhood at my Uncle and Aunties dairy farm, staying in the summer holidays and helping with the haymaking and watching my uncle in the milking parlor; as well as this experience I worked and helped on a local farm whilst I was at school, this all contributed to a growing love and passion for farming.
When I left school in the early eighties, I went to work as a farm labourer and trained as a herdsmen: I attended Langford University of Agriculture as a collage student under the then ATB (Agricultural Training Board) Scheme.

In the eighties farming was hit terribly hard, like many others at the time making a suitable income as a farm worker just wasn't attainable. At the end of the eighties I left farming and joined the rat race, now twenty years on I'm ill and burnt out but grateful enough to still be here as they say every cloud etc. As part of my future sanity and to maintain some sort of normality I decided to see if I could manage a few animals, on a very small scale.

This part of the site is mostly a diary of our experiences over the past twelve months and hopefully a little more after that. Its now the end of autumn 2011 and my spine has pretty well given out, its been difficult in the least, so we now plan to clear all the stock over winter and see what the spring brings, as well as making economical sense trying to cope whilst being so poorly could compromise the care of animals and that simply is not an option.
